OK I have a value in a cell "85-0065" and I want to drag that same value down the column. But when I drag the value down the column it assumes that I want the previous value plus one. so it goes 85-0066... and so on. How do I stop that.
[ul][li]If you drag the values using the little black square on the bottom right-hand corner, it drags and auto fills incrementally (big black plus sign).[/li]
[li]If the information is a plain numberic value, it chooses the copy to fill option, if it is a number like yours with the hyphen, it chooses the fill series option. [/li]
(A little menu pops up when you finish dragging so you can choose options for the filling.)
[li]If you drag by pulling anywhere else on the border it moves the information (four-headed arrow).[/li][/ul]
I have 2000. It doesn't give me that option. But I'm sure it is somewhere else in 2000 where you can pre change wether you want it to copy to fill or fill to series.
Hi everyone, here's the really quick easy way to control incrementing. Hold Control while you drag. It won't increment. UNLESS it's an integer or decimal with no associated text, hyphens, etc. (such as "1" or "153.2". Then you have to hold Control to make it increment (because Excel isn't sure what you want to increment by.) UNLESS you highlight and drag two value cells. For instance you have 5 in the first cell and 10 in the second. If you highlight both cells, you can then drag and you won't have to hold the CNTRL, because Excel will assume you want to increment by 5. Try it, it's a cool trick. Using Control comes in handy if you're copying addresses (10 Main St.) and you don't want the number to increment.
My 2 cents worth... I'm betting on the "keyboard" - NOT the "mouse" - because the "mouse method" in many situations is SLOWER.
I agree it's nice to know about the "Control" key when "dragging and dropping", and you DON'T want any increment. Thanks, dianemarie!!!
HOWEVER, I have to agree with Skip... i.e. using Copy & Paste can be EASIER and FASTER - especially if one uses <Control> C for Copy, and <Control> V for Paste.
Steps:
1) Use <Control> C on the cell you want to copy.
2) Highlight the "Paste range" (hold down the SHIFT key, and use the DOWN Arrow key and/or PAGE Down key).
3) <Control> V.
I suppose it's always a "personal" thing, perhaps depending on one's "knowledge of the keyboard". However, one should not overlook the FASTER methods.
