I have a web site that I would like to host. I have a computer, a static IP, and apache installed on windows2k. I don't have any idea how to cause apache to load my web site when I put my IP in the browser window. I also don't know how to have my domain name go to my IP,,, I just registered my domain name today... any hints on all this. I know it's the most basic question in the world, but I really want to learn this stuff and can't find the answer to such a basic question.

what u have to do it get your domain name bound to your ip address. this can/should be done by the company that registered your domain name. a domain name is stored as a dns entry that simply maps a text name to an ip address.

as for your content. when you type the url ro you should see the default apache html page. this is stored in the folder apache/htdocs and is called index.html. you have two options here. Either place all your content in this directory and over write everything there(don't) or set up your own document root folder and add an entry for this root in the httpd.conf file. look at the supplied documentation to do this, its not complicated.

good luck :)

If you didn't have a hosting service when you signed up for your domain name, they probably parked it for you. If you type in your web address such as and it takes you to a page that says coming soon or something, that is what happened. If you signed up with network Solutions, then they are going to want at least 2 name servers to point to and you only have one IP so that would make things tough. Here's what you can do. Go to and sign up with them for free. Then change your records with network solutions to point to their name servers (zoneedit will give you their IP addresses). It will take up to 4 days for the changes to take place but until then you will be able to use to access your website. While setting up your A records with zoneedit, you can point you@yourdomain.com to and existing e-mail address you already have. Then when you're ready to have the mail sent to your own server, just set up you MX record and your all set. The great thing is about this is if you have a problem with your servers, you can go change your records or forward your site to a temporary host and BINGO! it's done, no more waiting 4 days for the change to take place. Good luck with your website.
