I dont know if i am supposed to post this here but i installed mandrake, it overwrote my windowz so i obviously phuqed up, no worries though i reinstalled everything but i dont have linux anymore Thing i wanted to ask was that when i did have mandrake installed i was fiddling with it and doesnt it have a GUI? like the windows desktop? only thing that i had come up was the black screen like a linux prompt with commands i typed "help" and none of them would take me to a GUI. KDE is one isnt it? so is GNOME, it asked me which i wanted to use before hand i clicked KDE and hit next, i made a logon name and intalled it..... then when the time came it would blink in and out of the Desktop looking thing in between the prompt and the desktop* then after like 3 flickers stayed in the prompt in which i would log in.... then all i could do was type help for commands or exit to logon again, my question is that does linux have an desktop interface i thought it did? WTF im confused m8s

startx should fire up your linux GUI.

(Not sure why you'd want to do this. GUI's are just to impress the eyeballs between keyboard and chair.)

What do you want a GUI for??

But it sounds like you have the wrong driver installed. There's definately something incorrect about your setup.

Try XF86Setup or Xconfigurator or whatever you have??

Before you go running XF86Setup or Xconfigurator I would try startx.. That normally works when your at a black screen with a prompt.. Someone doing tech support shouldn't overlook the obvious

Well, since the screen was flickering three times and then went to the prompt I assumed it was trying to start up X.

startx won't get him anywhere.
