I thought to stop samba I needed to run the command
./samba stop from /opt/samba/bin however when running this I get error bash: ./smaba: No such file or directory

the files in the bin dir are below

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1708 May 6 1999 addtosmbpass
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 446 May 6 1999 convert_smbpasswd
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 285792 May 6 1999 make_printerdef
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 284632 May 6 1999 make_smbcodepage
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 571808 May 6 1999 nmbd
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 390088 May 6 1999 nmblookup
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 708696 May 6 1999 rpcclient
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 455604 May 6 1999 smbclient
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1127732 May 6 1999 smbd
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 656476 May 6 1999 smbpasswd

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 4795 May 6 1999 smbtar
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 734428 May 6 1999 swat
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 282440 May 6 1999 testparm

To start samba is it ./start_samba
am I missing files ??? or am I being silly.
thanks in advance.

sirrom, sorry don't know anything about samba, but I assume you are typing samba stop and not (as it appears from the above error message) smaba stop?

No doubt others can advise whether your syntax is correct. Cheers.

Normally, Samba is started automatically when your server boots up.

On my Solaris box, there's a /etc/init.d/samba script :-
[tt]
!/bin/sh

case $1 in

'start')
/usr/local/samba/bin/smbd -D
/usr/local/samba/bin/nmbd -D
;;

esac
[/tt]
So, that shows you how to start samba, & to stop it, just kill the smbd & nmbd demons.

Typo error sorry.
However looking at the init.d I have tried running
/etc/init.d/samba stop and this seems to have worked.
It definatly stopped the nmbd proccess not to sure about the smbd. Oh well more testing thanks anyway.

Thanks Ayjaycee just sussed it.

I find that doing a:

ps -ef |grep mbd

And then kill the process of the smbd and nmbd do the trick. James Collins
