I can't see a selection when I try to select text?!?!

So there I am, typing something out and then suddenly, when I want to dive in and change something... I can't see which part of the text is selected when I'm trying to select... AAArrrgh! My boss in tapping his watch, please help!

...look under view > show edges, is it turned on?

That worked a dream... what a strange setting, why would someone have no selections on?
