After a long process i install the new versions of norton antivirus and firewall 2005 after 2 months the icons and folders of those programs disappeared so i try to install them again and i couldnt, i had to uninstall them first but i couldnt so i check the symantec help web and i followed every single instruction and nothing finally i had to delete some of the registry entries by hand and i installed the firewall but theres no way i can install norton in the middle of the installation it stops and i have to reboot the computer. After all this nightmare the computer started to be slow and didnt show most of the content of some web pages so i tried to configure the firewall but thats impossible, there are a lot of scripts errors and i cant do anything, im thinking on uninstalling the firewall so i can try to get rid of every sign of norton (both programs) and start again. Im thinking on changing the antivirus program, i downloaded AVG but i cant install it when the installation starts suddenly stops like when i try to install norton antivirus and i have to reboot the computer.
Can somebody help me please

Norton can be a real problem to get uninstall if it gets to hosed up. I have been seeing a lot of Norton AV not updateing and being off line lately. I have hand edded norton out of the registry with good luck a no# of times. But I was trying to regedit Norton AV 2004 out of a Dell note book and killed the registry no boot, corrupted system file. Lucky for me I had set a restore point before starting and used Bert Pe to hand restore the registry from the restore point. So the point here is be very careful in removeing norton from the registry, it only takes one typo.
You could have a virus that is preventing you from installing a AV program. Try a couple on line scans, this is a good one.

allteltec,
On a side note, could you tell me how you used BartPE to access a restore point?

I tried checking my computer with the the norton online antivirus and trying to install the AGP antivirus but as soon as it start the process the computer stops working, is like something is not letting do this, i though about the firewall but is not that, i dont know what else to do. I bought a new hd to save all my data but im thinking on installing it as a primary an reinstall everything but that is really a lot of work and the last option. Im going to try uninstall the antivirus and the firewall so i can erase everything related to symantec in the registry but there is some data that i dont know if is from symantec or not, if i save a copy of the registry with scanreg can i use it later if i damage the registry??

After BertPe is booted I use ubcd4win now it is based on BertPE, use file Explore to go to System Volume Information Folder, open _restore{ Folder, There you should see a lote of RPxx Folder, the highest no# RP should be your last restore point. Open the RPxx and open the snapshot Folder inside the snapshot Folder you will see
_REGISTRY_MACHINE_SAM
_REGISTRY_MACHINE_SERCURITY
_REGISTRY_MACHINE_SOFTWARE
_REGISTRY_MACHINE_SYSTEM
_REGISTRY_MACHINE_.DEFAULT

You can check the file dates to see when the Restore Point was set.
These are your 5 restore point hive registry files, Now copy and paste Them to C:\windows\system32\config
Once thay are copyed there I rename the origanal SAM, SERCURYTY, SOFTWARE, SYSTEM, DEFAULT I usually just add a file extention like .org or .old then you rename the _REGISTRY_MACHINE_ files droping the _REGISTRY_MACHINE headers Renameing to SAM, SERCURITY, SOFTWARE, SYSTEM, DEFAULT
Remove BertPe and reboot and you will be back up. If I am going to do a lot of Regediting I will set a restore point first then if think go bad you can get back up.

Ok

I have had the same problem with an XP Home Machine (same error messages) and almost gave up on it.

However I got hold of the Removal tool (SymNRT.exe) for the 2004/2005 editions of Norton from Symantec's site and it has installed absolutely fine now.

I am convinced that this has definitely cured the problem

Here is the link to the page

I hope it will help you

I have received at least 6 message of thanks from people as it has solved the problem ...

Best Regards

Meldrew

To get rid of the NAV or SAV registry entries contact Symantec technical support and ask for the NoNav tool. It's a batch file that runs and removes all SAV/NAV entries from the registry. It works extremely well, you'll just require a restart after running and prior to re-installing.
