I can't convert a word file into pdf - why?

When I press print, I tick off the "print to file", press ok, a box pops up.
In the file name box, there is a *
So I type the file name, making sure I leave the * in there with it, then press ok, but the box doesn't vanish to complete it's work, it just sits there, so I have to press cancel.
Should I be typing .prn or some other extension at the end of the file? Eg: *Aishaa.prn

I rebooted the computer, but the same thing happened. what could it be?
TIA

Do you have the Adobe Distiller installed?

If so you should choose it as your printer or the pdf writer. That is the only way to save it to a pdf file. What you describe above is saving it to a print file .prn this is not the equivalent to pdf.

You will need the distiller or pdf writer installed and have to select it when you click on print.

Hope this helped.

I have adobe pdf reader installed, but now how do I get it into the printer box as an option?
TIA

You need the pdf writer from adobe. You can go to The adobe acrobat program cost around $200. They have an on-line application for creating pdf files but it is $9.99 a month or $99.00 per year.

You can find this service here
They do give you three free trials so if you only have to create a couple of documents you could use that. They have adobe 5.0 for $249 so maybe you could find the 4.0 somewhere cheaper.

Hope this helped.
