Hello all,

My mac knowledge is limited, but it is enough to be dangerous. All systems are 8.5 and above I believe. No OS X.

The school at my church wanted all of the comptuers hooked up to the internet, so I readily volunteered to get it to work. I got a D-link router and everything is networked and can see each other, however 3 out of 5 don't grab a DHCP address and I don't know where to look from here. TCP is enabled, and the network works (appletalk).

Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Appletalk is almost completely independant of TCP/IP

In the TCP/IP control Panel (I am on 8.6)
Connect Via Ethernet
Configure Using DHCP server
Search path cableone.net in my case, it is your ISP

if you know DNS name servers for your ISP, put them in Name server Address

(there are 3 User modes, you may wish to be admin) I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

Wouldn't search path be the router?

<snip>(there are 3 User modes, you may wish to be admin)</snip>
What is this? How do I get there?

I didn't need to do that on the other two. Could that be a 8.x vs. 9.x difference?

I have not worked with a router that was a DNS server, they may exist, but I have not seen one.

Under Edit is a menu item User Mode, as a guess Apple was trying to make it look simple, when it is not always simple. I have not used 9.x so I am not sure. I doknow I am on TCP/IP 2.03 and they are on 2.6x

for work with TCP settings I reccommend Mac TCP watcher a shareware Ping/trace route/DNS resolver and connection monitor

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

Thanks for the hints. I will look into and let you know how it worked. I thought installing it would be a 30 min job... Spent 4-5 hours so far. Grrr %-(

Don't worry about search path, it's only useful in larger networks with internal DNS servers. Really unnecessary, as the internet DNS's will be filled in by DHCP.
Installing them should be a simple job really. If they're all set to ethernet and DHCP. If you have it set to that, what IP is listed when you go into the control panel? Some weird number that does not belong to your network? If that's the case, it's NOT getting an IP from the router and the problem may be connectivity related. Have you tried giving one a static IP that falls within the range given by the router and seeing what it does?

Oh, and the TCP/IP control panels for 8's and 9's are almost identical looking. ________
Remember, you're unique... just like everyone else.

Thanks all for your help so far. We now have one computer that isn't connecting. VERY strange. I don't know. They are happy with where it is at right now.
