I am trying to retrieve files from a non-responsive notebook hard drive by making it a slave on a desktop computer. I see the drive alright but it keeps telling me to format when I try to access it. is there anything else I can do? i really need to retrieve some files/pictures before formatting.

You could try some data recovery software. I haven't found a good program that is free, but there are various comercial programs. I can't remember the name of the program I last used, but I think it was O&O Data Recovery.

yes - data recovery app is best chance - Google will find lots - getdataback is often recommended here (I've used it a few times, seems good, though had to spend a fair while identifying what I needed on one drive).

is free - but definitely not as effective as getdataback.
