I have two identical computers and use an SMC router (and a Motorola cable modem) to get to my COX internet.
One computer gets on internet, the other does not.
I've gone through all the cable routines and router routines. Still I can't get the one on line.
I have tried everything I know, reinstalled Windows 98SE, even installed a different browser to see if it was a Internet Explorer problem, and the one computer still does not get to the internet.
I've even switched the two computer locations on my home network but the one that doesn't get on-line, still didn't get on-line.
I think something in my config files on that computer may be screwed up.

Any counsel or ideas?

Can the two computers talk to each other? Can you exchange files between them?

Look in device manager and see if your NIC card is disabled or even listed. I've got one that only works every other boot because of IRQ steering problems that can only be fixed with a bios flash. I just put up with it. "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing....." [idea]

Also see if you are able to ping or traceroute at the command prompt to any website. This would determine whether it's a browser or networking problem.

Make sure you're network protocol stack is identical on both systems (Control Panel -> Network). Is the router using DHCP to randomly assign IP addresses to the pc's? Are the settings for the TCP/IP protocol identical to the working pc?

Have you tried using winipcfg in Start->Run to check your IP configuration? ~cdogg

Have you checked your config in DIAL-UP NETWORKING? Might see if the info is the duplicate as P/C that will log in. Could be something in "SEVER TYPES" that is incorrect. Check by going to MY COMPUTER, DIAL-UP NETWORKING, right click PROPERTIES and then click tab SERVER TYPES. Are log onto network, enable software compression and TCP/IP boxes checked? Also, is the top line option "Type of Dial-up Server" the same as the P/C that is connecting?
