My PC has just been rebuilt by our IT dept, and I can no longer print from a VFP3.0 application. After clicking on the 'print' button on the standard print dialog, it asks me if I want to print to a file, but will not send it to the printer. It was OK before, and the printer hasn't changed - what could have happened during the rebuild and how can I fix it?

What exactly do you mean they "rebuilt" it? New hardware? New OS? If they do this on a regular basis, wouldn't they know what they changed and need to fix?

Hi John,

Go into the Windows Print Manager and open the properties of the printer you speak of. Make sure 'Print to the following port' isnt set to 'FILE: (Create a file on Disk)'.

Sorry, got a little trigger-happy with the submit button. :)

If you print to the printer from another application(Word,Excel,etc..), does it go to the printer or does it ask you to print to file? Jon Hawkins

Thanks very much for your replies.

Other applications (like Excel and Word) go to the printer rather than file. So it doesn't seem to be a general printing problem. But I will try Jon's suggestion.

By the way, by 'rebuilding' I meant that all the software and operating system (Windows 98) were wiped from the machine and reinstalled.

I understand that VFP stores printer settings in a report's .FRX file. But I included a 'PROMPT' clause in the REPORT FORM statement, so that ought to override these...? It worked OK with the same printer before the rebuild, anyway.

John :)

The program could be hard coded to print to a printer by a network printer name

When the IT people rebuild the computer, the printer name that was used in the program is no longer in the Printer folder. Printing to a printer name that does not exist in the printer folder will force Foxpro to print to the defailt text file print driver. David W. Grewe
