I am thinking of setting up an home network with a mac notebook and a pc, but I never did this before can I just use a regular hub/router, and how do I get them to communicate with each other, do I need extra software. The pc will be using win xp as Os
I have the same setup running here, PowerBook with OsX and PC with XPpro.
ALL you need is obviously a NIC in each machine, and a crossover cable. There is no need for a hub/switch (@@ or a router for that matter).
Plug the network (crossover) cable into the two machines, make your IP's one different, and your subnet the same. Then on the Mac, ensure that personal file sharing is enabled and windows file sharing if you wish, you also have to tell the firewall to allow personal file sharing etc. Then using the finder select go/connect to server. If it does not see your PC then type in the IP and press GO.
All should be well.

All that's required for evil to suceed is for good men to do nothing.
ok that sound good but will the mac read the window xp software, and vice versa the xp the mac software or do I have to get more software for them to function together
you will need a router if you plan on internet access or more than just those two machine being connected together. Get the one with the built in switch/hub and your all set to build your own network.
If all you want to do is transfer files between 2 machines the crossover cable will do the trick.
yes I know about file sharing and internet sharing. I do have a small network. This is for a customer of mine but I have never conect Mac and Pc together before, so that is where my concern is. Do I us tcp/ip, appletalk or do I need a software to access files from the apple to the Pc or Vice Versa. My main concern is how do I share the file between both wether I use a crossover cable or router/switch/hub, I also know about ip and subnet does apple use that also, or does apple support netbue
Although, connectivity software is available, i have been advised to steer clear of a package that has 'dan' in it's name, sory i cannot be more accurate.
Essentially, the PC acts as a server and the Mac as a client, and uses SMB to connect. It mounts the ntework share on the desktop, like when you insert a cd-rom.
Hope this helps, if not post again and i will explain in detail my setup.
