I am seeing a message "Updating tables...." when in design mode.. why?

I have a large database that I use for creating ad hoc queries. It has grown to be large...I have noticed recently that in the lower left hand area of the screen I see a message that Access is "Updating tables"... and there is a delay in accessing objects. It seems to run constantly. What's going on, and can I shut it down.
I am running A2007.
