I am running Exchange 5.5 SP4 on clustered W2K SP2 servers with approximately 300 users on each of two clusters (yeah, I know, its overkill, but I inherited it). Each server has a gig of RAM and 1.5 gigs of virtual memory.

I recently noticed in Task Manager that available physical memory is hovering between 4 - 24 megs and don't know if I should be concerned. Total memory used is approx 1G out of 2.5G. Since restarting STORE.EXE has no effect (physical usage is back up as soon as everyone is logged back in), I assume there is no problem. The OS will manage the physical and virtual memory and I don't need to worry, right? The IS just needs so much memory for each logon and the OS provides it out of its resources of physical and virtual memory, right?

It sounds like you have 2 healthy systems. There is nothing to worry about.
The only thing you can do at this point in time is to make sure that all the users empty there deleted items on a regular basis.
I would also suggest to set a Mailbox size limits. Exchange will try and load all the open mailboxes into memory instead of leaving them on the HD. The reason for high memory usage.
The larger your mailboxes the more memory it will use.

Hope this answers your question.

Many thanks. I thought that such was the case, but I am not the best OS and HW guy around. Didn't realize that the IS tried to put user MB's in memory. Alas, I also inherited a set of company executives that have disallowed mailbox size limits even after the impact of a large mail store was explained. The DB improvements of Ex2K will be mine soon. Thanks again.
