I am running Exch5.5 SP4 on Win2k Sp2, I have 3 servers in the site and am doing online backups of the PRIV and PUB using Arcserve 2000.

Recently a user deleted a public folder containing calendar items, the Arcserve 2000 BrickLevel backup doesn't handle calendars so I need to restore from my online PUB.EDB, however this process attempts to stop the IS service for the restore and estimates 5+ hours to restore a mere 200mb of Public Folder information.

Here's the question - can I restore the PUB.EDB from this server to another server in the SAME site without screwing up the existing public folders in the site? I am unsure what would happen...

Thanks in advance.

Yikes, I posted this with no topic and it created one for me....

Install Exchange 5.5 to another box. At the Organization and Site Screen Choose Create a new site - DO NOT join an existing site.

Enter the same organization and site name as your existing server.

Restore only the IS to your new box. Use a client like outlook to copy out the folder(s) you need to a PST. You can then use outlook again to replace the missing information on your live server.

Microsoft has some related articals on this method....

I created a new server called LAB-MAIL, the old server name is OPMAIL, I chose create new site and used the existing site and organization names. After restoring the PUB.EDB to this new server using the Exchange agent I wind up with a database that I cannot repair.

I have been fighting for several hours to get the IS to start without any success, as an alternative I tried copying an old PUB.EDB from an offline backup into the MDBDATA folder and running ISINTEG -PATCH on it. The IS will start but none of the public folders are accessable, the folder name is visible but clicking on the folder results in the error:

"Unable to display the folder. Microsoft Outlook could not access the specified folder location. The contents of this public folder are currently unavailable. Either the Microsoft Exchange Server computer servicing this public folder is down or the public folder has not been replicated to this site. See your administrator."

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks.

As a note. the AS 2000 brick level agent should be able to backup calendar items. The agent does not keep the properties of the folder, but will keep the properties of the calendar items. If restoring to a different location, a mail folder called calendar will be created at the destination you chose. Each of the items within the folder should be recognized as a calendar item and if moved into a folder that has calendar properties, should be seen correctly.

I have tried this and it does not work, running AS2000 SP3 or SP4 the restore of a calendar from a brick level backup results in a MAIL & POST ITEMS folder full of the calendar items, you can drag them back into a calendar folder but the items will have no START/END TIME or DATE.

This is a known issue w/ Arcserve tech support. Their only response is to use the full online backup of the IS to another server (or the same).
