I have recently built 2 NT servers. One is my primary domain server the other I setup as a stand alone server. The stand alone server, I am going to install Exchange server and use as my mail server and the other will be the server for all the applications and databases. I am wondering what I need to do in order for my Primary server and all the workstations have access to the mail server. On each workstation, I have it set up for Client on Microsoft Network, and the network workgroup is in the name below the user name and password. I was told about something called a trust relationship is what I need to access the mail server, if that is so, how do I go about doing that? Do I just make a administrative userid and password and give that to my Primary server, or do I create the same userids and passwords as I did for the Primary server so you log onto both servers at the same time? I also have another problem with, on some machines are logging onto another server with a different workgroup all together, how do I go about allowing the workstations that log onto another server workgroup to all the workstations to have access to a database on the Primary server??? Sorry for the length of the problem, I just wanted to give anyone enough information as possible. The workstations are all Windows 98 SE and the servers are Windows NT 4.0 service pack 6. Thanks for all the help.

Trust relationships are set up between different domains to allow users logging into one domain to have access to resources in another. If your stand-alone server is part of the same domain as your PDC then a trust relationship is not required.

If there are multiple domains in your organization and the clients you are trying to support will be logging onto different domains then you will need to set up a trust between your domain and all the other domains the clients may log into.

This is done under User Manager for Domains in the pull-down menu for Policies. You would typically want to set up a two-way trust...you trust another domain and the other domain trusts you...put in the account and password. A domain controller in each of the other domains must then accept the trust and/or activate the trust from their respective domains using the same method.

In addition.
I think you are confusing Domains for Workgroups. Your Primary server is a Primary Domain Controller. You do not log into it. You log into the DOmain, for which it is the primary controller. You add your Stand-Alone server into the Domain in the same way as you would a workstation.

Your workstations would typically connect thru the Exchange server and beyond using a Proxy Server and client software for it.

If you already have a 'Workgroup', Assuming that the other is actually a Domain, do they need to be separate? If they do you need to set up a Trust as explained by dxd, but consider the level carefully. You may want to consider merging the lot, even if a certain amount of rebuilding is required, at this early stage, its better to play and plan and not attempt to build you final configuragtion.

Our set up is similar to yours. The previous writers are correct. You dont need a trust. Make sure your all your computers are added to the same domain. On the client end, just give the name of the email server under the options when asked. (Are u using Outlook?)

Unless you've got some specific reason why some pc's are on the workgroup, just add start having them log in to the domain instead. If you dont, what will happen is that those who log into the workgroup will be asked for name and password everytime the try to get their mail. When I started here half were on the NT domain, and half were on a workgroup (for no apparent reason). I've been slowly moving all to the domain. [sig][/sig]

Thanks for all the help I appreciate it. [sig][/sig]
