I can find white papers for Wineframe fault tolerance but nothing for Metaframes.

Hi,

This is probably a silly question but ...

Would Metaframe - which is an add-on to Microsoft Terminal Server which is itself based on NT4 - fault tolerance solutions be any different to NT4 solutions?
The fault tolerance would be applied to NT4. MetaFrame is irrelevant. If anything it is advisable to use a RAID controller with as much on-board cache as possible. This can have a noticable impact on the performance of the system.

For additional fault tolerance you can use Citrix Load-Balance option, or other emerging technologies on the market place. We have also implemented solutions for application and data fault tolerance on Terminal Server using Vinca.

We are a Citrix partner in the UK who has had some dealings with Cargill's in the past. We have implemented many of these systems and are continually researching new concepts on the marketplace. I would be happy to discuss your requirements with you in further detail and demonstrate how to best utilise this technology.
Getting back to the original subject....

Under Terminal Server NT fault tolerance is in place. Whatever you would do for an NT server is good enough for Metaframe. However with Metaframe you do have the ability to Load-Balance which is added fault tolerance. This option however requires additional servers and depending on the utilization expected and the budget may not be the right solution for you.

There is another issue though that was not documented within Metaframe 1.8 that caused a problem in an implementation I worked on. You may experience a problem reassigning drive letters if the fault tolerance with a RAID controller is set up prior to Metaframe. There is an article on Citrix Website that is associated with Metaframe 1.0. It may worth the interest.
