I have been successfully using IE5.5 on a Windows ME machine. All was fine for while, but recently, clicking on a hyperlink sometimes results in an immediate restart of my computer, as if I'd hit the reset button. There seems to be no pattern of events or keystrokes, it's not a repeatable thing (that is, not always the same links on the same sites), and it doesn't happen every time I use IE. The only recent change I made, which may have been before the problems started, was to install an IEEE 1394 card and PictureGear Lite (came with a Sony camcorder). Has anyone heard of this problem before, and if so, is there a solution to it?

Yes--I am running McAfee VirusScan (the latest version) and Norton CrashGuard. I installed Crashguard some time ago and didn't notice this problem until recently...but I upgraded McAfee sometime in December, which come to think of it was probably not too long before this all started.

I am pretty sure it is Norton Crashguard, infact i am positive of it. The same thing happened to my brother-in-laws computer. I think even unistalling it keeped the values in the registry. Search the hard drive for a file called nprotect. If you know how to modify the registry this should work, if not i will walk you through it.
go start->run->type in regedit
go to this key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
and look for anything labeled nprotect
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
also look in this key,
tell me if you find anything...... :)

Well, I've uninstalled Norton Crashguard and removed the offending registry entries (which were in /Run and /RunServices). I'll let you know if the problem happens again anyway.

Thanks! s-)
