Hyperlink to Reference List

I am working on a MS Word file, initially drafted by someone else. At the end of the file, there is a reference list. The reference list is designed in such a way that when I click on any reference, the whole reference list gets highlighted. When I right-click, and select Toggle Field Codes, it displays { ADDIN EN.REFLIST }.

In the document text, references are mentioned in the format (lastname, year). When I click on any (lastname, year), the text gets highlighted in grey color. When I control-click that text, it takes me to the corresponding reference in the reference list. When I right-click on any (lastname, year), and select Edit Hyperlink, Address shows a code like this; #_ENREF_referencenumber. So, for example, if the address shows #_ENREF_3, upon clicking (lastname, year) takes me to the third reference in the reference list.

I have figured out all these details. However, I have not been able to reproduce this scenario in a new blank word document. For example, how to create a reference list and assign it the code { ADDIN EN.REFLIST }, such that by writing #_ENREF_referencenumber to the hyperlink address could take the reader to the corresponding reference in the reference list.

ADDIN Fields are not really documented anywhere and rarely used. I have not seen them used to any effect on a document surface in the way you describe. It sounds like you have hidden bookmarks embedded somewhere for the hyperlinks to work, though.

I would be interested in seeing your document if it's not confidential - Tony at Jollans dot net.

Enjoy,

Thanks Tony.

I will not be able to share the document due to confidentiality. However, based on the hint given by you, I further explored the options. In the Insert tab, I selected Bookmark, and checked Hidden bookmarks. It showed me all _ENREF_ReferenceNumber codes. The codes begin with _ENREF_1 and end at _ENREF_25 for 25 references in the Reference List. As a sample, I selected _ENREF_3 and clicked Go To. It took me to the third reference in the reference list.

Also, when I right-clicked on Reference List section, and selected Edit Field, the Field names showed =(Formula), and Field codes text box showed ADDIN EN.REFLIST. May be, this helps in clarifying my issue.

Your field description suggests the document was created using a 3rd-party Addin like EndNote, a product often used for creating references and bibliographies in Word. Even if you have that 3rd-party Addin installed on your system, a new blank document won't have any such fields in it. Similarly, without that 3rd-party Addin installed on your system, you will be unable to edit the fields it created for the existing document.
