Hyperlink problem in Project 98

Hi,
I am having problems with hyperlinks to excel documents in Project. When I click on the hyperlink the excel documents open, but when I return to Project the project file I had open is after closing so I have to reopen the file after each time I use a hyperlink.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
