Hyperion Essbase Java API for 6.x and 7.x and Install base by version

I am performing integration with the Hyperion Essbase Java API for 6.x, 7.x and 9.x. However, I currently have a 6.x and 9.x environment. Is the Java API the same for 6.x and 7.x to help drive the decision to try and acquire a 7.x environment?

Additionally, does anyone have an idea of the rank of number of customers installed by version for 6.x, 7.x and 9.x?
