I'm confused about Parent and Child partitions in Hyper-V. Are these partitions actual partitions on the hard drive (say a 100 GB drive split up into 5, 20 GB drives) or "virtual" partitions like in Microsoft Virtual Server where each Child is running in its own little file on the same partition that the Virtual Server runs in?

Thanks in advance.

They are not file or OS partitions, but rather partitions of the machine. A lot of people get those confused at first, so I tend to use the VMware terminology of "guest OS" or "virtual machine". Though technically the parent partition is also a VM.

They do not require a disk partition (though they could potentially use them). The virtual disks that are presented to the guest/VM/child partition are actually .VHD files stored on the hard disk that is visible to the parent partition/host.

Ah, ok. So a lot like Virtual Server then. Thanks for the info!

Next question. If you install Hyper-V as a core install rather then a server role, can you still manage Hyper-V through the Hyper-V MMC on a different machine?

Yes. That is pretty much the only way to manange it in that case. The same also holds true if you are using the stand-alone version of Hyper-V server instead of the Windows 2008 with Hyper-V.
