Does any one have a working solution for setting up voice mail using a laptop with windows 7 home premium? I have tried a few emulation programs with no success, I have even tried moving hyper terminal from my desk top to my laptop. Unfortunately I am not a computer guy, when I hook up my serial cable the screen blinks from black to whatever is up, a message blinks saying something about "not optimal screen size" (can't read it because the screen goes blank, then when it comes back the message is gone.
I can't seem to get Hyper working the way it does on XP. most of the time it asks for a port number or I get nothing on the screen.

Looks like mine is only for VGA. Will a serial to USB work?

That will probably be your only option to use a USB to serial port cable as very few new computers are fitted with a comm port these days.

If it's working, then leave it alone!.

From the sound of it you are using a PC connected to a RAD which you then log in to, to make changes. My question is why? Why don't you just log in to the RAD? No on site PC is required.

I am trying to log in directly to the call pilot with the serial port.

This may be a stupid question, but why not use a crossover cable to the ethernet port and use Element Manager.

Logging into the serial port of a CP is not the way to go. Either via a network connection or through a RAD (F983). You seem to already have network access, so just add the CP to the network and you can access via VPN or whatever means you are already using to log in remotely.

Reading the FAQ's section first will answer your questions.

Serial is for backdoor troubleshooting.
Ethernet is for programming.

I should have clarified. I do need back door troubleshooting.

What is it you need to do in the backdoor?

Try this
·Connect one end of Null Modem DB9 serial cable to com port on laptop, the other end to serial port on Call Pilot.
·On laptop add new HyperTerminal connection (start > accessories > Communications >HyperTerminal)
·Choose “direct to com” and Settings:9600 baud, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, none parity.
·Once Hyperterm is connected, press Return.

Unfortunately My laptop does not have a serial port. It is VGA out only. The call pilot will not boot and I do not have an IP address. So I am left trying to access it with USB and a serial adapter with windows 7. Not going well.

I'm still puzzled why you have not downloaded a serial port program such as Putty. There are many others such as ZOC that is free to use for a limited time. Just do a search on the Internet.

I now have putty. It seems the problem is with my laptop, I can't seem to get the program to open properly and see my USB port.

I use a Belkin USB serial adapter. I had a hard time finding a winds 7 64 bit driver for it. Do you have the proper driver installed for your adapter?
