I installed sendmail and qpopper4.0.4 on a linux7.3 server box.
Sendmail is working well, but qpopper is not.
I can't get the port 110 open,and can't telnet this port.
I have made sure /etc/services includes a line of pop3 ,and add a file named pop3 in folder /etc/xinetd.d.
I also restarted xinetd, get nothing.
When connecting this mail server, I got "The connection to the server has failed. Account: '192.168.1.104', Server: '192.168.1.104', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E"
What should I do?

Thanks a lot.

Hi,

In /etc/services your have a line for POP3:
pop3 110/tcp #pop3 service

The file pop3 you added to folder /etc/xinetd.d
Did you edit or check that disable=no

Have you checked your firewall rules?

xinetd is not limited to the services listed in the /etc/services file. Only inetd uses it.

Run 'netstat -nat' to see if anything is listening on port 110.

Check your ipchains, i always start by flushing my ipchains then blocking whats needed, try ipchains -F as root, then try to connect. Hope this helps.

I created and edited a file named pop3 in /etc/xinetd.d, and made disable = no.
I checked no firewall by using lokkit.
In firewall configure, I have not setup anything.
netstat -nat does not show port 110.
But got no help.

If you dont show a listen on port 110, then it wont be a firewall problem like i first suspected(Was my problem) Can you manually start qpopper. You may check /var/log/messages to see if it shows anything stopping it from starting(I believe this is the correct logfile, feel free to correct me if i'm wrong). Hope this helps.

Lets see the file you created in /etc/xinetd.d directory...

How do I manually start Qpopper? Popper -s qpopper?

I believe the file in /etc/xinetd.d is correct. I compared it with the same files in other mail servers and make sure the server path is correct.

Actually, I downloaded and installed resoures file of qpopper4.0.5 before. It seems that qpopper doesn't fire off.

Today, I found and installed rpm file of Qpopper. After installation, a file named qpopper was auto created in /etc/xinetd.d , and port 110 is open.My mail serer is working.

I guess I did something wrong to compile and configure qpopper when using qpopper resource file. I really want to find out it.

Thanks so much for your help.
