I've got a problem that has happened once before....i come in and don't get a confirmation email from lone-tar (our backup software)on the backup or the validity check
(also i cannot eject the 4mm tape)

last time i tried to do a remote reboot and it didn't work......i had to drive out here and the system was hung on that process....
i had to do an improper shutdown from that point...but it did reboot gracefully thank goodness..i dont' know how to find out the open processes on a tape drive ...it's /dev/rStp0 i need to kill it off....i cannot eject the tape untill this happens...and i'm afraid i'll have to reboot and it will freeze the system again

any ideas....PLEEEEEZE....??

To see which processes are using a device, you can run the "fuser" command. eg,
[tt]
fuser /dev/rStp0
[/tt]
Alternatively, and for a much more detailed look, get a hold of "lsof" from the SCO Skunkware site. This will show a lot more info, and may even help you resolve the problem with the drive locking up. thank you very much andy, I finally ended up calling lone-tar's tech support...they helped me fix it but we're still supposed to find out why it happened today..their looking over the log files.

I don't know if you use lone tar or not..but at the main menu you can type "kill" and it will kill all lone tar's open processes...and even though the tech guy wasn't expecting any there were a handful....one of which had a printjob to a printer in another city from one of our local users.....the odd thing is the tape backup begins at 2:10 am...i guess it's just one of those mysteries of life

thanks again for the help =)
