Hi,

I found a huge 'lastlog' in my FC4. Do anyone know why its size seems adnormal?

/var capacity:
/dev/sda2 29753588 138596 28079180 1% /var

ls -l /var/log/lastlog
-r-------- 1 root root 1254130450140 Oct 27 21:10 lastlog

The df -k lets me know that it doesn't consume any space. However, why it shows the adnormal size to me?

Thanks

Do you have a log rotating device? Does your log manager handle log rotation?
What are the first and last few lines of the log?

The Redhat products (and Fedora) always have shipped with abnormally large lastlog files as part of their history.

Typically when I install, I delete their lastlog file and it gets replaced with a far smaller file once the box builds history. Do so at your own risk, your security milage may vary.

That must be a corrupted i-node or something, that file claims to be 1.2 terabytes.

Oh dear, I didn't read closely enough.
My redhat reference was a file that starts between 200K-19MB and then once deleted becomes something nearer to 50K

Terabytes is obviously a problem

Hi all,

Thanks all of your comments. It seems to be normal after I try the command '> lastlog' to make it null. Now the log is growing normally.

As ericbrunson said, how to fix if i-node table has problem?

Thanks,

tikual
