hub and switch problem

we have a network like that

internet-------router---------switch 1----fiber optic converter 1--------------------------(5km)------------fiber optic converter 2------------switch 2---------connected pc's

when we use switch2 network does not work,when we use instead of switch 2,a hub network works properly(this configuration was working 3 years) we try to understand this problem

can you help me?

This sounds like the switch2 has suffered some form of hardware failure or maybe in the case of a managed switch a software failure.

Check it is working when you connect two PCs to it using ping, if it fails then get it fixed.

This does happen sometimes out of the blue.

1- HUBs have fixed port properties , 10 or 100 MBPS.
While switch ports in many instances have AUTONEG
property.
That is they try to negotiate speed 10/100 MBPS, flow
control, HDX/FDX. If the PC NIC and the switch port
cannot agree than no connection is established.
2- The switch port connected is configured differently than
the NIC connected
a- NIC speed and switch ports are statically
configured incompatibly(Speed, Flow control etc.)
b- The vlan of the switch2 port where the PC(s) is
connected is not the same as the switch2 port where
the converter.

Some explanation about 2.b. It is possible that two networks entities at different vlans speak to each other while at different vlans asa long as they are also at different subnets and there is a router with two legs one in each vlan. THAT IS NOT THE CONFIGURATION OF YOUR NETWORK.

The explanation above is a common error when going from shared to switch environment which might seem like a HW problem. In 99.999 % it is not a HW but misconfiguration problem.

How to check the port parameters:

- For PC by the LAN parameters in Windows environment. I do
not how it is done in SOLARIS/UNIX/LINUX.

- Every switch has a simple CLI which enables the ports to
be configured either by directly connecting to an RS232
port or by telneting to its management address. If your
network is more sophisticated than you can possibly
configure/check the switch port from a GUI based
mangement.
