I need to edit this file, but can't find it on the server.

Could anyone tell me which directory it is located in????

many thanks

manc

Is this on a unix/linux machine or on a windows machine?

If it is on Linux, you can try either:

/usr/local/apache/conf/httpd.conf
or
/home/etc/httpd.conf

or you can search for it by moving to your root directory and executing:
find -name httpd.conf

------

if it is on Windows I really dont know where it is by default. You can right click on My COmputer and select Find, and then search for httpd.conf

Gerald

thanks, its located on a unix machine (Apache), Ive found it, checked the attributes, but I'm buggered if it will allow me to edit it :)

What kind of problem do you have editing it? Permission denied?

you will need to be logged in as root in order to edit the httpd.conf file.

I'm logged on as administrator, I dont really understand being logged on as root..

many thanks

forgot to say, I'm not actually getting an error, its just not being saved, and I checked that the permission is set to write :)

linux root=nt administrator

root is the absolute power account. be carefull when using it

hmm. how are you editing it?
are you saying that you edit the file, make some changes, save it, then open it again and the changes that you just made are not there?

Or are you saying that the changes that you make are not coming into effect on the server?

One thing you should know is that you will need to restart apache after you make any changes to the httpd.conf file in order for them to take effect.
Normally restarting apache is done in 1 of these ways:

/etc/rc.d/init.d/httpd restart

or

/usr/local/apache/bin/apachectl restart
