I have just built a new PC and most of it seems to work OK apart from certain internet stuff.

The modem (normal 56k card) can connect to the internet and use internet explorer OK, but when I try to use software that uses another protocol (ftp for dreamweaver, smtp for outlook etc) I just get errors.

I've looked through all the modem settings and can't find anything obvious. Is it possible the modem would only support http?

I'm not sure if it is relevant, but the machine is on a local network. It can ping itself and other machines, but other machines time out when they try to ping it. The file sharing works fine though.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks,

Gareth

Most likely it is a configuration issue (on Outlook or Dreamweaver) or there is some kind of firewall in the way. Do you have a software firewall in place or are you using XP?

However, this doesn't necessarily explain why you can't get out of your machine using ftp, etc...XP firewall blocks incoming connections but not outgoing.
[ol][li] Your modem almost certainly won't be stopping you using anything other service besides HTTP[/li][li] HTTP uses TCP port 80, FTP uses port 21, other services use different ports...You have a classic firewell symptom of only allowing port 80, all other ports are blocked.[/li][li] Check your LAN settings
- you should stick to a private IP configuration (e.g. IP 192.168.0.x, subnet 255.255.255.0)
- if you have specified a default gateway in your network adapters properties, remove the gateway's entry. this is only if you have a router / gateway on your network.[/li][li] Check for a firewall (e.g. Zonealarm, Blackice Defender, Norton Internet Security...) - check your firewall's settings. If "block all ports except 80" is selected, unselect it.[/li][/ol]
