http traffic getting blocked?

experiencing weird issues...when i first boot my machine all is well...i can browse sites, hit my mail pop server, IM...and then out of the blue...my http and mail traffic quits...i'll go to a command prompt and ping domains...and the dns resolves them...but i can't reach them through my browser (IE, firefox, mozilla or netscape)...the funny thing is my IM still works!!!
i have no AV software running...and have shutdown the microsoft firewall
my dsl modem traffic lite is still flashing away and shows that it is still sync'd
my LAN connection status still shows that i'm connected and receiving some packets

if i reboot all is fine for a period of time...sometimes 30 minutes...sometimes 30 seconds...
please help

using XP home edition sp2
my internet connection is through a home dsl modem

Have them replace the modem. The issue may be in your ISP's network.

Have already replaced modem... and works fine on another machine.

. Then do a Winsock stack repair. Note the special instructions for SP2: faq779-4625

Reboot and test.
