This guy is a potential suspect in theaft on code from Valve Software. There are many people on both side of the fence defending and attacking him. Do you think federal authorities did anything wrong from what the man postest? I think they where completely within the legal bounds. Has harsh as it seems they actually didn't touch any of the roommates gear. Its mildly amusing seeing some of the responces as they don't have a clue. Its distrubing to but I've always known that many people that are so vocal don't really understand the laws that they are vocal about or about what it takes for a society to really exsist.

Two of my favorite quotes from the reader's comments, true words of wisdom:

If this guy is speaking the truth then why ain't there any news on TV.

i hope your innocent because i really doubt you had anything to do with the theft of the hl2 code, and if you are props to you for being a part of it

IF this is not B.S. and IF this is actually what happened... Isnt the Secret Service only involved for mail/wire fraud? I can see the FBI involved for the valve thefts but the secret service is not involved in simple theft.
also,This search was pretty tame by comparison. Try (like me) having a college room mate that thinks growing a plant that WAS NOT pot but looks a bunch like it. (after a paraniod landlord called them and they got a warrant)The ATF did a screaming combat syle entry and threw everyone to the ground so hard some people got bruises (yes, the 2 freshman girls that where wearing running shorts, 1/2 shirts and sandals where extremely threatening and I was the only other person there),dumped every single drawer on the ground, (silverware, clothing, etc) dumped every single piece of dirty clothing out of my hampers onto the floor, Emptied every single cabinet to the floor (they where at least carefull not to break my glases and dishes when they put them on the floor) dumped all of my trash in my front yard so a dog could sniff it and sent several people into the attic to search. While this was going on they had me sitting on my front porch with my hands cuffed behind my back while a very big dog was sitting in front of me looking very mean. Did I get an apology for wrecking the house of an innocent man? not even close. BUT!!! I am not mad, this was a minor inconvienance. I never went to jail. As far as I know a warant to sieze all of these PCs need hard evidence like a log. They cannot just go up their and start this with no evidence.

What would make me angry beyond all comprehension is if my lifes work was stolen out of my house and when 1/2 the community i work in supports the thieves. If this guy stole valves code I say hang him by his fingernails and beat him thoroghly.
If he stole financial info and is trying to make an illegal buck on it (more than likeley what the secret service would be looking for) then he needs to do the time. If nothing, then he needs his PCs back and needs to look into why his ID is on logs that show illegal behavior and change his behaviour. To many people are about blaming the system but cannot put an equal amount of critisism to what the real problem is, themselves.

This was talked about on Slashdot.

The Secret Service gets involved once it reaches a certain dollar amount.

One of the other comments was that once law enforcement feels they have sufficient evidence to initiate a search, they are no longer your friends, but are representing society in their effort to collect enough evidence to bring prosecution.

My personal opinion was that the break-in was a stunt by some juvenile individuals that are probably now having an "oh sh**" moment.

That would have to be a WELL organised prank and you think they'd have come clean with it by now.

Its interesting to see that you've been put through this type of thing George and understand it for what I concider it is. Your situation seems a little extreme....but then I'm in australia now and the charge for growing a plant is like a $50 on the spot fine.
