i was doing a lab last night and it was related to establishing multiple sessions from the same host, via telnet and using the routers HTTP services.

An easy enough task in itself.

In the lab manual, it said "why is the HTTP service not shown as an active connection"

I dont know this - anybody care to enlighten me?

When a web page downloads from a server, the TCP connectivity closes. Each page load requires a separate TCP connection after which the connection closes, so when you look at the service there are no active connections such as with telnet which maintains the tcp session until you disconnect or someone clears the line.

Web servers can be configured to maintain a connection, but if many people try to hit the server at once, there may not be any connections available so the maintaining of a single connection is not normally configured.

HTH.

A Cisco Certification lab made reference to "netstat"? I thought that was a Microsoft utility...

HTTP 1.0 behaves pretty much as Cluebird outlined. HTTP 1.1 (used nowadays by a very large number of websites) supports persistent connections which keeps the TCP connection to allow the transfer of numerous items (JPGs, GIFs etc) from a website without having to tear down and bring up a new TCP connection each time.

I found the following from the CCO which shows HTTP 1.1 was introduced in 12.2(15)T.

Thanks Cluebird/KiscoKid - very useful posts.

wabob, yes it's an MS utility but I dont understand why thats an issue? It was just being used to illustrate the multiple sessions from host to router.
