http://foo.com DNS gets www.foo.com HOW?

What kind of entry in DNS /Bind (Windows 2000 actually) makes the

http://www.foo.com

server answer when someone only asks for

http://foo.com?

Or is that a technology other than DNS making that happen?

I have wondered this for years. ...............................

I thought it was a "feature" of the browser making the assumption that there is a

http://WWW in

front of the domain name. I vaguely remember MS making a big deal that one of the new browser releases did this.
