Hello All,

I'm attempting (Limited sucess so far) to set up help for a programming project. I am trying to use the Microsoft HtmlHelpWorkshop (HHW) version 1.3.

First, is this the best place to ask questions? Is there another forum which discusses this tpoic sprcifically?

Has anyone here used this 'product'?

I have been through ~ 1/2 of the "tutorial" and gotten everthing to work, except the filter by "Information Types". In this exercise, I can get the 'Customize Information' box to appear and can navigate through the 'wizzard' to set the Information Type Categories, but the TOC display doesn't change (Hide Topics De-Selected) and the 'Help Level' doesn't change for topics which have 'Graduatoions' of help detail [Beginner ¦ Intermediate ¦ Advanced]. Further, the 'Wizzard' doesn't retain the selections when "Finished" (It has the same settings each and every time I go through the process, none of the "customizations" are remembered.

Does anyone know what's going on?

TIA,

Michael

I Assume you might be able to get partial help here, even tho this forume would be more suited for HTML coding and what not like on a web page, you might want to also try one of the Visual studio forums( Visual C++, Visual Basic, Visual Interdev, whichever comes closest to what you're trying to do )
Karl
kb244@kb244.8m.com
<a href=
Experienced in : C++(both VC++ and Borland),VB1(dos) thru VB6, Delphi 3 pro, HTML, Visual InterDev 6(ASP(WebProgramming/Vbscript)
Have you tried other products? What does HTMLHelpWorkshop give you that something else might?
Liam Morley
lmorley@wpi.edu
<a href=] :: imotic :: website :: [
"light the deep, and bring silence to the world.
HTML Help Workshop (A Microsoft Product) is my default/only "choice" because nothing else I have tried would even get through the setup, much less actually produce anything resembling a help file. While this is probably more a problem in my use than the actual product, it seems to me, that where I have problems in getting through the setup of an application, I also have problems in the use of that application.

Actually, my 'first' choice was for the Win95 help, which is (supposedly) easier to use w/o third party addins/supplements. When I attempted to buy the "advertised" book, it was listed as "out of print" - thus dashing any hope of actually using it.

I was able to buy the two year old 'reference' manual for HTML Help, only to find out that it features version 1.1, while the current version is 1.3. Further agrivating my irritation, both the web site links referenced in the book are "dead", leaving me with no resource to contact the supposed 'expert' on the system.

Even with the revision level changes, HTML Help was able to actually get through the mechanics of the first 1/3 of the book and create a "viewable" help file - at least in a stand alone fashion. The "bug" which started this thread is the first instance I could (have) not figured out from relatively simple research into either the "HTML Help" Help file or the out-of-date publication.

So, in my simplistic opinion, it is not just my "Choice", it is the only product which "works". Additionally, as far as I can tell, no matter what other "addin" or Supplemental system one "chooses" some "Help Compiler" is necessary to transform the "Source" files into a compiled/useable HELP file. Why not use the "free" one which comes with the development tools? Of course, there are systems (e.g. personal wants) of developers/managers which require a more sophisticated approach to their help systems than is available with the Microsoft tools, however I do not want/require ultra sophisticated functions - especially on my 'maden voyage' into these murky waters!
Ok, I'm sorry- I thought you were seeking help on HTML, when you were trying to make help programs using HTML.
Liam Morley
lmorley@wpi.edu
<a href=] :: imotic :: website :: [
"light the deep, and bring silence to the world.
