Not exactly a tech question but...

What is your favorite HTML editor for the Solaris platform? I've done some Web searching and tried a couple (such as HotMetal) but am not thrilled with what I have found so far. Coming from the Windows world I used HomeSite which was fantastic so maybe my expectations are too high?

i generally use 'vi' it's a good editor and seems to run even over a slow link from a remote machine ... :)

otherwise i use Netscape composer to quickly knock stuff up ... :)

both of these come with a standard installation

...

there aren't too many HTML editors under solaris, you could try looking free source at the Linux stuff, and see if anything will port ... but it really matters what you want to do with the HTML as to which tool to use :)

what do you want to do with the HTML ... make something quick and fast that can be seen on all platforms, and even work in a 'lynx' browser, or something that only runs on IE5/6/7/8/n?

I asked what was used for documentation and was handed this HUGE manual on troff and associated facilities dated 1980. Took a look thru the manual and immediately started looking for an HTML editor (heheheeh).

I want to produce documents without having to wade thru the crazy 1980's world of troff with an eye toward the future of creating an Intranet at the company on which we can host documents available to everyone via a desktop browser. I would also be able to setup FAQ's, knowledgebase, methodologies, etc. and use hyperlinks to tie it all together.

I hope to find an HTML editing facility that provides the ability to setup an HTML document quickly without having to manually enter all the HTML codes (i.e. take a plain ASCII text document and import it and have it automatically converted to HTML).

Just got done looking at Netscape Composer. Looks like that fits the bill :)

I simply opened my .txt plain ASCII files in Composer and bingo, instant HTML. A little reformatting here and there, addition of links and I'm on my way.
