Hi,

I am wondering whether we can figure out which language the web page was developed in by looking at the URL? What other parameters (view source??) give out information in this regard?

(fictitious URL I created)

What can you say about this page from looking at this URL?

What is the 'cfm' extension?

Thanks

Jino

Here is a list of the ones I know about...

.do, .jsp - both tend to be Java Server Pages
.cfm - as Tony mentioned is Cold Fusion
.nsf - Lotus Notes
.asp - Active Server Pages
.aspx - Active Server .NET pages
.php - Personal Home Page
.pl - Perl
.cgi - Common Gateway Interface (can be compiled from many languages)

Maybe some others could post through any I've missed off the list - for interest if nothing else.

Cheers,
Jeff

I read some articles about file extension. They said that is more secure to not let visitors to find out what software you use.

Security through obscurity is a terrible practice so I wouldn't put much weight into what you read on the subject. Doing a lookup on the headers returned by a lot of servers will tell you not just which software is installed but sometimes also the version of the software so hiding the URL is pretty pointless in that case.

Even if you hide everything you can, it makes it slightly more time consuming for someone but isn't going to stop them gaining access if there is a security problem with the software you are running.

Hope this helps

ASP could be, JScript, Javascript, or VBScript.

ASP can also be written with Pythonscript and Perlscript, maybe more that I'm not aware of.
