.htaccess server parsing

How goes it?

I have an SSI that I need to run on a virtual host. There is NO .htaccess file what so ever yet. It appears as though httpd.conf is pretty much unmodified, except for the basics and the v-hosting. I have root access (although I'd rather not go that route).

this is the .htaccess file:

AuthName AddHandler server-parsed .html

Am I missing anything?
Any suggestions? Hope I was of some help...

I see something that we might find helpful:

the error log shows this:
...com/docs/ .htaccess: AddHandler not $ allowed here

(right where the "$" is, the page breaks over to another screen...that's pico for ya!)


Something else:

the .htaccess file is in the top dir of this v-host. the html doc that needs it is one subdir below. Could that be the problem? Hope I was of some help...
