Hi,

i`ve got two routers one Cisco 837 (IOS 12.3(11)T8 ) connected to an ADSL Line and one Cisco 1603 (IOS 12.0 ) connected to an isdn router as back up to the WAN.I`m using hsrp on the routers to effect the fall over. These routers are on the same LAN.The problem i`ve got is that they seem to be losing visibility of eachother at random and then the ISDN router starts making calls as it thinks the Cisco 837 is down.one tempory way out i`ve found is to clear the arp cach with a reboot of the routers.

but i`m after a more perminant fix . Can anyone help!!

If you're routers are losing HSRP messages between them randomly, you really need to return to first principles and check some of the obvious probable issues inc:

1. Check/replace physical cabling.
2. Check/replace switch and/or switch ports
3. Check/replace router and/or router modules
4. Check physical switch ports, router interfaces and interconnecing switch trunks etc for errors.
5. Setup syslogging on your routers and interconnecting switches (perhaps with certain useful debugs running) to log to a remote server. You can then peruse this server's log for any potential causes of the issue you're seeing.
6. Check the Bug Toolkit on the CCO for HSRP-related bugs and, if necessary, upgrade the IOS image on the router(s) (potentially the 1600 si more at risk as it's running quite old software)

Hope this helps

also if you saying clearing the arp works, perhaps the mem on the 1603 is maxing out? are they both connected to the same switch? only other thing I could suggest is ensure a device on the network isnt broadcast storming and preventing the keepalive on the hsrp.
