I am having intermitant problems with my HP 8550N color printer, only when printing A4. It looks like printing but then paper jam, the paper is stuck under the drum and is always crumpled up, has started doing it more frequently in the last week or so

If it keeps jaming in the first place I would think that there is another piece of paper jammed up in there "under the radar" of the sensors of the printer...

so it says the jam is cleared... but its not

If you mean the toner drum I would just poke around lookin for the sucker.. if you mean the fusor assembly I would unscrew it and pull it out looking for the loose paper..

Hope that helps

No it has been printing to this ok, and all of a sudden jams every so often. And there is no paper anywhere in site, else if there was surely it would jam every time.

Not necessarily;there could be a scrap of paper in the paper
path.Been there,done that.
A good visual inspection with a light will help.
A TONER_SAFE vacum to clean the paper path will help.
Just my $.02 based on past Gotchas.

I ran a static clean of the drum and it seems to have fixed the problem
