I have an HP 2100dtn printer installed in a remote network. I have it plugged directly into an ADSL router and the printer has an external IP address (requirements of some bespoke software).

Sometimes the users cannot access the printer and I cannot ping it from anyones PC .When I go to the printers configuration, the TCP/IP settings section is no longer there.

Can anyone advise as to why this disappears?

This may be too simple a suggestion, but in a case like this, we must start with the basics. What does the JetDirect configuration page say is the IP address, and what is the printer using as the source of the IP address? DHCP? If the source is that, then it's most likely that the IP address of the printer is changing after the lease expires.

By default, the JetDirect card in HP printers are set to get their IP from DHCP. In this case, either your router, or server, depending on how you're network is set up. Printers should always be on a static IP address. If your server is assigning IP's then you need to set up an exclusion range, and assign the printer an IP within that range. If your router is assigning IP's, depending on the router, you can set it outside the range that it's assigning. ie, Linksys routers typicall start their IP assignment at 192.168.1.100. So anything between 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.99 can work.
