HP1220C firmware bug? misregistration

Further to my problems with registration (sheets fed manually via the back), I have produced a number of images showing the problem.

The images show a series of five diagrams, each in its own colour, printed one on top of the other over a period of time (indicated beside the colour coded label). There is an increasing misregistration to the left with every print job until the printhead docking creates a loud crunching noise after which I have to re-initialise the printer or the green and amber lights flash in unison (requiring me to re-initialise as well).

This problem is easily reproducible and DOESN'T occur with sheets fed from the main tray. In fact, I can use a main tray fed print job as a re-initialisation of the printer with respect to my back-fed printing tests. Opening the cover, causing the printheads to position themselves for cartridge replacement also seems to invoke a general re-initialisation.

I believe this is a firmware problem and, unfortunately, I am not in a position to correct it. I sincerely hope that someone out there can corroborate my tests and inform HP. Our efforts through the HP service system (here in France) have not been fruitful.

I find it difficult to believe that this problem has not been dealt with before. It seems that feeding via the back will crash the printer after six to eight sheets fed every ten minutes (spacing them every ten minutes makes the problem easier to see on paper). There also seems to be a time dependence which, for the life of me, I can't explain either.

Help?!

Thanks,

Ed

P.S. Please let me know here if you would like me to send you a couple of JPEGs showing the problem.
