HP-UX boots intermittently

I have an HP-UX 10.2 system that is booting intermittently. It has failed from two disks and a tape. So I am assuming it is a hardware fault.

It fails while initializing the I/O. I am receiving the following error:


It was not possible for the kernel to detect the process at which it crashed.

I/O hardware probe timed out.
I/O system hang.


I don't know how to go about finding out what may be causing the problem. How do I determine exactly what is hanging the system, especially how if it is a hardware item causing it?

Are there any errors in /var/adm/messages file
Have you got a crash dum in /var/adm/crash if so send it to hp or if you know how to debug crash file do so

do you get anything is mail ?

in /etc/tombstones directory are there any files at the time of the crash ?

Hav eyou got GSP , if so connect to GSP and have a look at logs for any errors ?

You can also use STM( at # type stm) ( support tool manager) to test
indivdual components and have a look at error logs.


Have you got a support contract with HP ?
if so log a call with them as well?

Check /var/adm/syslog/syslog.log
Also check /etc/shutdownlog for errors , for panic messages
