I recently tried to install an HP 3845 printer on an old laptop PC running Windows 98. The install program reported the PC processor was too slow and the PC did not have sufficient memory. It refused to install.
Here's the fix:
1) Copy the HP installation CD to a directory on the hard disk.
2) Find the file /Applications/SystemCheck/SysCheck.dat (These names may not be exactly correct since I am writing this from memory, but the data file you are looking for will be obvious.)
3) Modify the properties of this file so it is not Read Only.
4) Open the file with WordPad.
5) Edit the lines that set minimum memory, processor speed, and processor type requirements. Note that there is a line that reads something like "RejectCPU=0x18xx,...". Change that line to "RejectCPU=0". (Again, this names may not be exactly correct.)
6) Save the file and run the install from the hard disk.
After that it installed perfectly. I had no trouble using this printer on a 233 MHz Pentium MMX machine with only 64 meg RAM.
