HP tape drive problems

Hi All,
I have a server that has an HP tape backup causing reboots. When the tape drive isn't in the server, it doesn't reboot in the middle of the night. When it is installed, it causes the server to reboot. Has anyone encountered this kind of thing before? Thanks,

What O/S?
What software are you using to initiate the backup?
Do you have anything else running on the machine during a scheduled backup?
In the middle of the night when it reboots is the server doing anything at all? Serving? Backing up?
