Like many others I have had some problems maintaining a dialogue with my HP Scanjet 5300c/5370c (one and the same)
Following a new installation to a P4 2Ghz running XP Pro,I installed my existing Win98 software and USB-d the scanner to the new box. It worked fine....
One day it ceased working fine,so I investigated the HP site, and found the new XP specific software, ready for download. The choker was that the driver/patch would 'not work in isolation'and that the entire 36Mb download was necessary.
As viewers might be aware, such voluminous downloads are rarely trouble-free,so after 2 fruitless goes, I contacted HP,confirmed that the new (XP)Software was the only way to go,in fact that the (Win98)HP S/ware 'would not /should not work on XP.Accordingly, I purchased a CD of XP specific software.
After installing it and the scanner (following the normal purging of all things HP)the scanner could not be found.
Further meanderings discovered that the scanner was shot, and I arranged a warranty replacement with HP Support.
When the software failed to find the scanner, which was fully detctable by the system,HP's only offer of help after 3 uninstall-re-install routines, was to test it all on another machine............
I uninstalled the XP version of the software for the 5th time, and installed the Win98 version, hooked up the scanner and it worked........
True,I am unable to 'scan to an application',but the 'save as' works just fine......Not perfect, but better than a 'no-choice' upgrade, which fails at every turn.
If it ain't broke, HP ,please don't try to fix it !!
