HP ScanJet 7450C ADF Issue

I have several HP ScanJet 7450C scanners around the office.

Recently (and coincidentally), I had the opportunity to scan documents of about 30 to 40 pages (20 lb. copier paper pages), using the ADF (two seperate documents on two seperate 7450C scanners).

Both scanners are pretty much new, out of the box, and the ADF has barely been used until now. Unfortunately, although the ADF on these scanners is rated for 50 pages, I found that the ADF choked on these 30 to 40 page documents and would have trouble pulling the pages through the ADF - it just does not seem to have enough tension or/and pull to grab the pages and ultimately you either get "ADF jams" or bad scans because of this.

Anyone out there have any other experiences with the ADF on this or similar models from HP and have any suggestions on how I can get the ADF to work better so it can feed the pages better?

Assuming the document meets HP's minimum requirements for feeding though the ADF, "fanning" the document is generally a good idea, both to separate and ensure separateness of each sheet.

Failing that, if these ADFs were left in storage at length, their rubber parts may need a light roughening or belt dressing. HP provides no guidance here, but Radio Shack used to sell a rubber conditioning product for cassette pinch rollers that I had used on ADF rollers.

Sloth is the mother of invention. Necessity is just a mother...
