Hello,

I am experiencing a problem regarding a HP scanjet 5200c on a IBM Personal Computer 300PL with USB.

I believe that the scanner previously worked on the system.
However, now the scanner refuses to appear.
I have tried reinstalling the software then hardware in the exact same fashion as the setup poster describes. But when I go to plug the USB connection into the computer, nothing happens.

I have tried reinstalling the USB controller driver and they ARE working.

I have read from HP's support site that because the computer is an IBM PC 300PL I may have to get another motherboard.

If anyone could give me some help on this issue I will be grateful

Here is what happened, your systme has the USB config stored but it's not listed in the registry anymore, correct?

You need to edit your registry. I don't know your skill set with Windows, for some people this is considered advanced. Here is what you have to do to fix it though.

Unplug the USB cable.

Click on START then RUN and type REGEDIT and hit OK.

Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

Expand Enum

Expand USB

Under USB you will see a list of entries named VID (Virtual Interface Device).

Expand each of these until you find your HP scanner. It will be listed to the right of DeviceDesc. Once you find it, delete that VID entry.

Then reboot your computer and once your desktop is fully loaded, plug in your scanner. The Found New Hardware window should pop up and then you should be ready to go.

Be careful and don't delete anything until you are sure. If you delete the wrong thing in the registry you could have a big problem. This is a fairly easy fix as far as the registry is concerned.

If you know DOS it's not a bad idea to back-up your registry files. Just in case...
Drop to DOS in the Windows directory and run this command
attrib -h -r -s user.dat
attrib -h -r -s system.dat

You just made it so you can copy and view the registry files, windows back-up doesn't always work. To back them up type this
Copy user.dat user.da0
Copy system.dat system.da0

Now the back-up files are the ones that end with .da0. Any problems, boot to DOS and copy the .da0 files ontop of the .dat files.

This WILL fix your problem. Ciao.

I have a Cusl2 from Asus, also I have a HP 5200C Scanjet.
I have tried Sehiser's solution, unfortunately, it still cannot work. However, I will be grateful if there are any people like Sehiser to give their suggestion to someone who need really help. Thanks Sehiser.

1: Are you definitely sure you have seen the scanner working on your pc?

2: What OS are you using?

3: Have you checked your BIOS to see whether the USB port has been disabled?..

As you can see there are always options...

4: Have you tried the scanner on a different pc to see whether it detects?..could be a scanner problem....

easiest way to troubleshoot is start at the beginning. Trial and error will always get you an answer, you just need to plan your approach :)

Sometimes a scanner has to be configured with one of the programs included with the scanner before it will be recognized.
I had same problem with a scanner that had pagis as one of the included programs and couldnt get the scanner installed. ran pagis and when I tried the scanner in it it found it and configured it and then I was off and running.

I have followed sehiser's directions, but it will not let me delete these values. I get a "unable to delete all specified values" message. Any suggestions?
