HP PSC500 cannot Run"Readiris" OCR on XP

I've recently transferred from a W98
machine on which my HP PSC500 "All in One" software which included "Readiris" OCR worked just fine.
Innocently upgrading to XP I find that the "All in One" CD will not be accepted by XP, and the XP drivers allow printing and scanning only, but the "Readiris" OCR drivers are not included.
HP tell me to contact Readiris.
Readiris say buy an upgrade for £98.00!!
Do I have any alternative to spending nearly £100?
Such as a source of appropriate drivers for Readiris which XP would accept?
