Hi,

We have a Proliant DL380 G7 server and last week i purchased a processor kit for it. The kit is the exact same processor as the one that is already currently in the server so that i'd have a matching pair.

The problem is I came to install it this weekend to find on powering the server up the fans starting running really fast and loud. After looking at all the possibilities I finally took the processor back out and the server was back to normal.

The kit consisted of 2x extra fans, the cooler, processor and thermal paste.

I currently have the server running fine and i have left the 2x extra fans in, so its something with the processor that is causing the issue. I have no light light up on the front either so am a little stumped as to what it can be.

I have searched google but everything seems to point to either faulty fan, case open or faulty dimm sensor. I dont have a extra ram sensor, but had extra rm and tried that with no change. Obviously the case wasnt open and its running perfectly with all fans plugged in currently so at a loose end.

Any ideas what it could be your help would be gratefully recieved.

thanks in advance.

It's absolutely normal for the fans on any HP server to go at full blast on startup.
They should calm down after a little while and definitely after the OS has loaded.

If the fans don't calm down I would suggest calling HP support and seeing what they have to say, a G7 should still be under warranty.

I agree with ntinlin - the fans should be on full blast when the server is first powered on but after a minute or two they should slow down.
