I just spent the better part of the morning trying to resolve this issue with our networked HP LaserJet 3700n.

The problem is not with the printer itself but with the JetDirect Network card.

To get it to work, you will need to Add a Printer. Select Local Printer. Next dialog box, choose Create New Port, choose Standard TCP/IP port, then Next.

A new Wizard will come up. Enter the IP address of the printer here (the name of the port should automatically come up). Once it recognizes the port, you will go back to the other wizard.

Select your printer and finish the installation normally.

If you don't know the IP address of your printer, you can find it by printing a configuration page from the control panel.

Hope this helps someone else!

Hi,
thanks for the info, I've been pulling my hair out for days trying to figure this one out.

could this be classed as a warranty repair?

thanks

Sorry, this would not be classified as a warranty repair. And based on your solution, it was also not a problem with the printer, or the jetdirect card, as they sound to be working as expected. It seems that you just didn't have the setup correct, and it took some time to figure out how to correctly add the printer's drivers to the computer, so you can print over your network.

I've working in a mixed DOS/Windows environment using Windows 9x and NT families. Here is the fix I have for a weird issue that has cropped up a couple times. While it may not exactly apply in this case, it is somewhat similar.

XP Workstations: A user may get an error when printing, usually in DOS from a database program, that says, "Write error on K:", also failed to print from Windows applications with a system tray message "This document failed to print". Solution: First verify that the printer is still shared and the hosting computer is turned on. Otherwise, error is probably caused by the Windows installation on the printer's hosting computer. Try first to uninstall those printer drivers and reinstall them, otherwise it will seem so frustrating that you'll feel a Windows reinstall may be needed. For some reason this issue arises when installing drivers for a network printer when printing from XP to 98/Me shared printer. Always use "Local printer" with "Local port" for these. Additional instructions:

1) Remove all printers. (log in as admin, administrator, and each user to make sure all printers are removed)
- or delete problem ports for all printers in the Printers and Faxes window under File -> Server Properties -> Ports tab.
- or Right-click on every printer->properties->click Ports tab->delete all LAN MANAGER, TCP/IP, Local, etc. ports.
- (Don't delete LPT#, COM#, or FILE: ports.)
- Reboot to clear registry.

2) Make sure "load and unload device drivers" rights are enabled for Power Users. This is optional since Administrators may not want to allow this. (If okay, the instructions are here. If not, skip.)

XP Workstations: Primary users with Power User rights may be allowed to install their own printers without requiring administrator logon. Go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Local Security Policy.
Security Settings, Local Policies, User Rights Assignment, Load and unload device drivers
Add User or Group, Advanced
Object types = Groups
Locations = [computer name]
Find now ... select Power Users

3) For any XP printer driver for printers attached to 98/Me computers, you must add printers:
- Add printer - NEXT
- Select local printer (not network printer) and uncheck "auto detect" - NEXT
- Select "Create a new port" and select "Local Port" - NEXT
- The box with "Enter a port name" pops up. Enter in "\\computerName\printerShareName" in box - OK
